Molecular biology · Systems biology · Peptide discovery
Dr. Ashkan Golshani is a pioneer in AI-guided peptide design, a Full Professor and Director of the Systems Biology Group at Carleton University, and a Principal Investigator in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.
With over two decades of research in peptide engineering, his work integrates molecular genetics, artificial intelligence, and high-performance supercomputing. He has been a driving force in developing methods to map and manipulate protein–protein interactions (PPIs), a foundation for target-specific drug discovery.
Notably, in 2008, together with Dr. Dehne's group, he led a team that computationally predicted the first-ever protein interaction map of a cell. In early 2020, using Canada's most powerful supercomputers, his laboratory engineered synthetic peptides that reduced SARS-CoV-2 infection by 75% in laboratory testing.
Dr. Golshani has also made fundamental contributions to genomics, including characterizing and naming more than a dozen previously orphan genes. A frequent keynote and seminar speaker at international scientific and industry events, he is recognized for connecting basic research with clinical applications.
His current work continues to advance AI-guided platforms for discovering precision diagnostics and therapeutics that minimize toxicity while addressing complex human diseases.
